Toronto Rock: Garrett Billings placed on injured reserve list

As the Toronto Rock prepare for tonight’s season-defining clash against the Philadelphia Wings, GM Terry Sanderson confirmed that Garrett Billings has been placed on the season-ending injured reserve list. Billings suffered an ACL tear in the second quarter of last weekend’s 17-9 win against the Vancouver Stealth.

As a result of this move, Nick Diachenko has been added to the active roster. This will be the rookie’s first action for the Rock, having spent time on the injured reserve list himself, with a lower body injury.

Diachenko was originally selected 14th overall in the 2013 NLL draft by the Buffalo Bandits, before being signed by the Rock as a free agent earlier this year. While considered a raw prospect, the Rock will be hoping to take advantage of the 24-year old’s speed and size.

Toronto Rock: FanFest Saturday at the ACC

It’s a big weekend for the Toronto Rock, as they take on the Philadelphia Wings at the Air Canada Centre tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. If they win, it will clinch a playoff birth, so hopefully you have an idea of how important the game is!

Anyway, if you’re looking for something to do, the Rock welcomes the return of FanFest prior to the game, between 5:00 pm-6:00 pm in the Galleria outside Gate 1. There will be lots of activities for the entire family, such as face painting, a poster zone and the Rock shooting gallery.

Toronto Rock legend and NLL Hall of Fame goaltender Bob “Whipper” Watson will be there to sign autographs. Plus, more importantly, you’ll get a chance to meet the Toronto Rock Cheerleaders, who will be performing during the event, as well as signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans.

Toronto Rock in-game host Mia Gordon will be hosting FanFest, with trivia and prizes available throughout the event. And, despite my admittedly irrational dislike for all mascots, I should tell you IGGY will also be around to harass meet the fans.

Saturday is also Autograph Night, with the first 5,000 fans in attendance receiving a Toronto Rock Cheer Card.  Fans will then be invited to go down to the turf at the ACC after the game to get an autograph from their favourite Rock players.

Toronto Rock: Garrett Billings named NLL player of the month

It has just been announced that Garrett Billings is NLL player of the month for March. He played in 5 games during the month and scored 30 points (14 goals & 16 assists).

For the season, the Toronto Rock forward leads the league with 63 assists and 95 total points. He is also second in the NLL with 32 goals.

Billings is on the verge of becoming the first player in league history with three straight 100-point seasons. He is also on course to break the NLL single-season scoring record of 116 points.

This is the second straight month the 2009 6th overall draft pick has won the award. He will be looking to win again in April and help the Rock make the playoffs.

Toronto Rock: Garrett Billings teaches how to pass & shoot

Ever wondered how to pass and shoot a lacrosse ball? I know I have. (I’m just too lazy to actually give it a go.)

Fortunately, here’s Toronto Rock forward Garrett Billings, arguably the best player in the NLL, to show us how to do it:

(Important note – Unlike Rock TV host Mia, I wouldn’t recommend trying this out while wearing high heels. Even if you only call yourself Debbie at weekends.)

Toronto Rock: Sights and Sounds of the game

I’m just as guilty as anyone of underappreciating the Toronto Rock since I first came to Canada in 2006. With the exception of the Argonauts, they’re the only team to consistently compete for and win championships since the Blue Jays won the World Series in 1993.

However, since starting to report on the Rock the last couple of seasons for Blue Toro, I’ve finally seen the light. Check out the sights and sounds from their most recent game at the ACC, to get an idea of how much fun you can have watching them:

Toronto Rock: Message from Rock cheerleaders

A very special message to all our Blue Toro followers from a few of the Toronto Rock cheerleaders:

Yes, I know it’s a day late, but I think we can let that fly. I mean, look at them!!!

Toronto Rock Home Opener: Live Coverage

toronto rock

I’ve been extremely fortunate to cover CFL, MLB, NFL and MLS games in the past. (And trust me, I never take this for granted. If I ever do, feel free to punch me.) I’m now happy to add the NLL to this list, as I will be at the ACC tonight to cover the Toronto Rock’s home-opener.

Whether you’re a lacrosse fan or not, it’s worth noting the Rock are Toronto’s most successful professional franchise during the last 15 years. And if that’s not enough to encourage you to pay attention, there’s always the Toronto Rock cheerleaders!

This will be my first time going to the ACC in an official media capacity, so I’m very excited. (Please excuse my fan-like tendencies superseding my ‘professionalism’.) Hopefully you can join me for our live coverage throughout the evening, with regular updates on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.  Enjoy the game!

Toronto Rock unveil new jerseys

Some of the Toronto Rocks cheerleaders made an appearance on TSN yesterday, to unveil their new home and away jerseys for the 2014 NLL season. Kudos to the girls for being able to maintain their poise and grace around the slightly creepy Mike Richards:

Toronto Rock: 2014 cheerleaders photo shoot

The Rock are currently holding their rookie and free agent camp at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.  However, with the main camp not starting until November 30th, I’m much more interested in their 2014 cheerleader photo shoot:

Toronto Rock: 2014 cheerleader auditions

Can you believe it’s October already?  The new NLL season will be here before we know it. (The Toronto Rock begin their 2014 campaign against the aptly named Calgary Roughnecks on January 3rd, at the ACC.)

In that respect, the Rock held their 2014 cheerleader auditions this week, at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC).  I don’t think there’s much more that needs to be said.  Enjoy the video:

Blue Toro and the Toronto Rock accept no responsibility for anyone suffering any adverse reactions, especially at the 0:27 and 0:58 second marks.
